Q&A

How long do porcelain veneers last?

When cared for correctly, porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years. It’s easy to look after your veneers — simply treat them like your own, natural teeth. This means brushing and flossing twice a day, as well as coming in for your regular six-monthly check up and cleans at the dentist.

How do porcelain veneers work?

Dental veneers are ultra-thin, super-strong “shells” made from porcelain that are hand-crafted to suit your desired tooth shape and shade, then bonded to your teeth. Porcelain has a translucency that closely resembles natural tooth enamel, so you’ll barely be able to tell the difference between your veneers and your real teeth. Plus, porcelain veneers are hard and durable, meaning they can function just like your natural teeth. Before your porcelain veneers are fitted, your existing teeth will be prepared by your dentist to ensure you get the exact shape and result you want.

What factors affect the cost of porcelain veneers?

The cost of dental veneers in Australia may vary depending on what the veneers are made of (porcelain or composite) and how many tooth veneers are required. Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite veneers because they are made from premium materials and are hand-crafted by highly-trained dental technicians using state-of-the-art technology.

Is there a less expensive alternative to porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers offer the most natural-looking and longest-lasting way to perfect the shape and shade of your teeth. But if porcelain veneers are not in your budget right now, you might consider composite veneers. Composite veneers can be quickly fitted in just one visit. However, it’s important to note that they do not offer the natural, translucent quality of porcelain and can discolour faster.

Can anyone get porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are a great way to correct a whole range of cosmetic tooth concerns. From gaps, chips and irregular shapes to uneven tooth lines, stains and discolouration, dental veneers can help to perfect and brighten your smile. However, there are some rare instances where porcelain veneers may not be the best solution. If there isn’t enough existing tooth structure or previous dental work makes fitting a veneer unachievable, a dental crown may be a better option. Similarly, teeth whitening or teeth straightening could be more suitable for your smile.

We will be able to determine whether you’re a good candidate for veneers at your first consultation. And thanks to our Digital Smile Design software, you’ll be able to see your new smile before deciding to go ahead with your treatment.

Why do some porcelain veneers look fake?

You may have noticed that some people with porcelain veneers end up with not-so-natural looking results. Whether their smile is blindingly white or they have impossibly perfect-shaped teeth, this is likely due to their dentist failing to help them choose a realistic shade and shape for their veneers. But this is not something you need to worry about at Great White Smiles — we will always offer upfront advice on what will look best for your face shape, facial features and skin tone. Plus, you’ll get the chance to see your new smile on-screen at your consultation then try in your mock-up veneers before we begin work. This means you’ll get the predictable, natural-looking results you always wanted.

Are your porcelain veneers made in Australia?

Too right! At Great White Smiles, our porcelain veneers are hand-crafted here in Australia by expert dental technicians.
